Paris Hilton to John McCain: I’m, like, ‘totally ready to lead’

It’s a variation on an old theme, but John McCain is learning to appreciate the wrath of a bimbo scorned.

The Republican presidential candidate made great sport of Barack Obama’s international sojourn, suggesting his Democratic rival was just another celebrity, like ditzy Paris Hilton or psycho Britney Spears.

“He’s the biggest celebrity in the world, but is he ready to lead?” McCain’s attack ad asked, against a backdrop of Obama being hailed by a chanting crowd of Germans.

The ad would seem to break a pledge to stay above such dirty antics, but it also seems to have worked. A new poll indicates the ad helped erase Obama’s nine-point lead, leaving the candidates tied at 44% each.

Enter Paris Hilton. Yes, she’s ditzy, but never underestimate her marketing savvy, no matter how modest her other talents. How else do you get to be world famous on the back of a lousy TV series, a sex tape and some awful singing?

Well, by putting out your own video, lampooning John McCain’s video.

“He’s the oldest celebrity in the world, old enough to remember when dancing was a sin and beer was served in buckets. But is he ready to lead?” the video opens, one of approximately 324 references to how old McCain is.

Lounging by the pool, in the requisite heels and skimpy swimsuit, Hilton notes she must be running for president, because “the wrinkly white-haired guy” says so. She offers her own energy policy, pausing first to finish an article on where to get the best tan. Then she pledges she is “totally ready to lead,” before closing. “I’ll see you at the debate, bitches.”

It’s fun, it’s effective. It’s also possible McCain may never see it. He’s admitted that internet thing is still a bit of a mystery to him. But maybe they’ll show it on the evening news. Surely Cronkite will be all over it.
