ROBIN Hood star Jonas Armstrong is to quit as the star of the BBC’s Robin Hood series at the end of the next run.

The 27-year-old Irishman, who shot to fame as the legendary outlaw in the Saturday evening drama, will leave after the forthcoming third series next year.

“I’m grateful to the fans for their support and to all the cast and crew or their friendship and loyalty throughout, but the time has come to take on new challenges and opportunities,” he said.

The BBC said he would bow out in an ‘explosive, nail-biting series finale’ but has not yet given any word on who will replace him.

The series, which killed off Maid Marian in last year’s final episode, has proved a smash hit for the BBC in the Doctor Who slot on Saturdays.

The BBC said the new episodes, as Robin looks for revenge, would be see the character ‘older and tougher’ than before, and would also see Friar Tuck joining his band of merry men.
