THE CAR rental firm set up by the no-frills airline easyJet is being investigated by the Office of Fair Trading after receiving dozens of complaints from customers that they had been ripped off.
The easyRentacar firm was launched in April by Stelios Haji- Ioannou, a self-styled consumers’ champion, and hires Mercedes A Class cars in nine European cities from pounds 9 a day.
But many customers who returned their cars believing they were undamaged have discovered excess charges of pounds 100 added to their credit cards.

One woman contacted the BBC’s Watchdog programme saying she rented a car from the company’s Birmingham office for pounds 47 but was later charged pounds 500 for damage she claimed she did not cause. A spokesman for the programme said it had received more than 40 complaints since the company’s launch. The Consumers’ Association said it was planning an investigation and the Office of Fair Trading said it was examining whether the refund policy, which states that “easyRentacar does not make refunds under any circumstances” broke consumer laws.
No one from easyRentacar was available for comment yesterday but Mr Haji-Ioannou, a 33-year-old multimillionaire who floated the parent company this month, has reportedly said he would abide by an OFT ruling to relax the policy of enforcing the pounds 100 excess charge.
